Your Guide to the Deposit Return Scheme
The Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) is a game-changer for Angola! It helps fight climate change and build a circular economy where resources keep getting reused.
How Deposit Return Schemes Work
Deposit return schemes are making it easier than ever to do your part for the environment! With DRS, you pay a small deposit on your drink, and get that money back when you return the empty bottle or can to a designated spot. It’s like getting rewarded for recycling! These programs are popping up worldwide, and soon you might be able to cash in on your empties too.
How will this impact your business?
Managing a nationwide business can be tough when recycling rules vary by country. Take Angola’s new DRS, for example. While details are still emerging, Angola offers a glimpse of what’s to come. Their scheme focuses on tackling climate change by including PET bottles, cans, and glass drink containers from 100ml to 3 litres, with a flat 20p deposit per container. Wales develop their own programs. We’ll keep you informed!
There’s been an update on how glass packaging will be handled under new recycling programs. In England and Northern Ireland, glass will be covered by EPR (Extended Producer Responsibility), which means producers will take on more responsibility for its recycling. In Wales, however, glass will be included in the DRS (Deposit Return Scheme), so you might get a deposit back for returning empty glass bottles and containers. We’ll keep you posted on any further developments!

Building a Better CommunityWhile there might be fewer drink containers in your curbside recycling, that’s a good thing! With DRS, people get money back for returning cans and plastic bottles (and glass in Scotland and Wales). The good news is, local authorities can still redeem any DRS containers that end up in household waste. It’s a great way to boost recycling rates and keep our communities clean!
