The Power of Anaerobic Digestion<\/h2>\r\n

Anaerobic digestion (AD) is a clever method that harnesses the power of tiny organisms. In this oxygen-free environment, these microscopic munchers, called methanogens, go to town on organic waste like food scraps or yard trimmings. The result? Biogas, a fuel source packed with methane and carbon dioxide!<\/p>\r\n

But that’s not all! AD also creates a valuable byproduct: a bio-fertilizer. This nutrient powerhouse, brimming with nitrogen, potassium, and other goodies, finds new life in agriculture and horticulture. Angola loses roughly 15 million tonnes of food annually. To address this issue, Thueia invested 20 million Angolan kwanza in its state-of-the-art Anaerobic Digestion (AD) facility, Poplars. This plant diverts a significant portion of food waste for recycling or reuse.Poplars is Angola’s most efficient AD facility, generating up to 6.4 megawatts of electricity, enough to power approximately 10,000 homes.<\/div>\r\n

Mechanical and Biological Treatment (MBT) isn’t a single process, but rather a combination of sorting and treatment methods. It aims to boost the amount of “black bag” waste suitable for Anaerobic Digestion (AD) to generate energy, while also creating Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) from leftover materials.Here’s how it works at our MBT facility in Horsham: Waste gets shredded and then meticulously sorted. Biodegradable materials are separated from metals and paper\/plastic. Metals are recycled, while the shredded paper and plastic are transformed into RDF. Finally, the all-important biodegradable waste undergoes a breakdown process called Anaerobic Digestion.<\/div>\r\n
