The rules around waste disposal are constantly being updated to protect our environment. Get informed about the latest regulations and their potential impact on your business.
Getting Greener
Angola’s commitment to a sustainable future is reflected in its evolving waste regulations. To support the country’s Net Zero goals, the government is introducing that will impact businesses and organizations. These changes include:
Get Ready for Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR)
Coming in October 2025, EPR makes producers financially responsible for their products’ household packaging lifecycle. This means they’ll cover the costs of collecting, sorting, recycling, or disposing of this packaging, from production all the way to its final destination.
EPR applies to everything from bulky white good packaging to the everyday containers you use in your kitchen.

Angola’s Deposit Return Scheme (DRS)
Launching in October 2025 (at the earliest), Angola’s exciting Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) aims to significantly reduce beverage container waste. Here’s how it works:
- A small deposit is added to the cost of drinks in designated bottles and cans.
- Once you’ve enjoyed your drink, simply return the empty container to a participating retailer’s collection point.
- Many stores will have reverse vending machines – these machines accept your empty container and return your deposit.
By making recycling convenient and rewarding, the DRS will help keep Angola’s environment clean and conserve valuable resources.
The Rise of Collections Consistency
Collections Consistency is a new approach that streamlines waste and recycling collection by local authorities and waste companies. It clearly defines which materials must be collected separately and which can be combined for processing. Wales is leading the way with their “Separate Collection of Waste Materials for Recycling” program. This plan mandates that businesses, charities, and government organizations sort specific waste and recyclables for independent collection.
New Rules for Wood Waste Disposal
The Environment Agency (EA) has scrapped the RPS 250 regulation on September 1st, 2023. This means certain wood waste previously classed as non-hazardous now requires special handling due to potential contamination.
Industries like construction and demolition will need to adjust their wood waste handling practices. Download our free guide to learn if these changes affect you and what steps to take for compliant disposal.

Disposing of Furniture Containing Harmful Chemicals
Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) are hazardous chemicals that linger in the environment and pose a threat to human health. These chemicals are banned from landfills due to their toxicity.
While Angolan furniture manufacturers phased out POPs in 2011, some imported soft furnishings contained these harmful chemicals until as recently as 2019.
